One Thing New Rvers Always Forget to Plan For (And Why It Matters)

Understanding the legal side of full‑time RV life so you can travel with confidence

You've checked the mechanical systems. You've researched campgrounds. You've color-coded your route. You're excited, you're ready, and you're planning your RV adventure down to the smallest detail.

But there's one category most people skip—and I get why. It's not exciting. It doesn't involve gear reviews or Wi-Fi speeds. It doesn't even appear in any travel vlog.

It's the legal stuff.

When my family hit the road in June 2022, I thought I was prepared. Hospitality management background, years with LegalShield, experience helping families navigate protection planning.

And you know what? I still discovered blind spots I hadn't anticipated—simply because full-time RV living creates legal situations that stationary people never face.

What's Actually Different When You're Mobile?

Here's the thing: a lot of the legal advice people give assumes you live in one place. You have a home state. Mail arrives reliably. You see the same doctor, bank at the same branch, keep documents in a filing cabinet.

Full-timers operate in a completely different ecosystem.

You could get a speeding ticket in Montana, have an RV manufacturer defect addressed in Florida, file taxes from three different states, and face a medical emergency in New

Mexico—sometimes all in the same year. Each of those situations involves different state laws, different court systems, and different requirements you need to know about before something happens.

The families I've talked to who've had legal problems on the road? Almost none of them saw it coming. And almost all of them said, "I wish I'd thought about this before we left."

Five Areas People Consistently Overlook

Estate planning that actually works across state lines. Your will is valid at home. But if

something happens to you while traveling, your family might face legal battles in multiple states.

Updated durable powers of attorney? Medical directives that travel with you? Most people don't have these sorted before they leave.

Mail forwarding and legal documents. You can miss critical court notices, IRS letters, or

important documents simply because your mail service isn't flagging legal documents the way you need. Then you discover it when it's too late.

Insurance gaps. Full-time RV living sits in a weird gray area for insurance companies. Is your RV a vehicle or a residence? Does your policy actually cover you when you're living in it full-time? Many families discover the answer when they need to file a claim.

Tax and compliance questions. Remote work, mobile businesses, income across state

lines—the rules vary wildly by state, and states are increasingly aggressive about pursuing taxes from remote workers. Most full-timers don't have a clear answer to "which state do I owe taxes to?"

Emergencies without a home base. A legal emergency at 2 AM in an unfamiliar state with no local attorney on speed dial is a very different problem when you can't just call your family lawyer back home.

This Isn't About Fear—It's About Planning Smarter

I'm not here to scare you. I'm here because I've lived this and talked to hundreds of families doing the same exact thing, and I know that a little planning now prevents a lot of pain later.

The families I know who've handled these situations smoothly had one thing in common: they thought about them before they needed them. Not obsessively—just thoughtfully.

They understood their domicile requirements. They knew their insurance actually covered them. They had access to legal help if something went wrong. They weren't stressed about what might happen because they'd already figured out the answer.

One Practical Next Step

I've created a checklist—Critical Legal Issues Full-Timers Can't Afford to Ignore that

walks through exactly what you need to think about. It's a quick assessment tool. It'll take 10 minutes.

You'll either check a box and feel good, or you'll identify an area where you need to do

a little homework before you leave.

That's it. No pressure, no sales pitch. Just a straightforward resource to help you plan smarter. Here's what I know: families who take care of this stuff enjoy their full-time RV

adventure a lot more. They're not worried about what might happen. They're just living.

You deserve the same peace of mind.
