Walkie Talkies & RV Life: The Tiny Tools That Save Big Headaches

Do We Really Need Walkie Talkies?

When we hit the road full-time, we researched lots the things and came across using walkie talkies for rv travel. Whether you use walkie-talkies for travel days for coordination between vehicles, parking, or more, there are multiple benefits to having them.

While parking, there are multiple reasons walkie-talkies come handy including:

1) Cell service can be spotty.

2) Avoiding obstructions.

3) Keeping a low profile while parking.

We now are part-time travelers and as we launched for our summer adventures this season, I vividly remember chatting with the kids about if we needed walkie talkies or not. Ultimately, I said , “Nahhhhhhh, we have our phones, we should be good.” It didn’t take long into our trip before I realized my mistake and my kids have been happy to remind me since!

Parking Without Walkie Talkies: What Could Go Wrong?

We had been on the road for only a few weeks and were at Craters of the Moon National Park, an area of spotty cell service, and my husband was parking the 5th Wheel. My teen was on one side of the rig and I was on the other, yelling to the truck “STOP” when it was time to reposition. I thought to myself, “Darn it! I now remember WHY walkie talkies are a must-have, especially for parking!” We maneuvered our vessel into the lunar landscape and my teen looked at me with a smirk and said something like, “Ya think ya want those walkie talkies now?” I smiled back, “Yeah…..” Lesson learned.

Why We Wish We Had Radios (Again)

We left that location and were on to another RV park. I was at the rear of the rig and ready to assist to park. The windows of the truck are down and my hubby’s slowly maneuvering into the space. (No walkie talkies. So we are having to yell up to the truck! Sorry neighbors!!) This spot was less difficult to get into but, the location of the electrical box was a little close to one of the sides of our rig, so I was watching it closely. As my hubby gets out of the truck to check the progress, again I think, “I wish I had brought those walkie talkies!” as I looked at the slides, wondering if we had enough clearance for each of them once extended. Yet another time that walkie-talkies can come in handy, is extending the slides to ensure that you aren’t accidentally extending it into an obstruction. There are various ways to discover if you have enough clearance to extend each slide. We prefer to measure with our arms while others have a measuring stick or similar. Needless to say, we remained clear of the electrical box by a mere inch, “Plenty of room,” my hubby remarked with a grin. Having a walkie talkie would have made the whole experience a bit easier and stress free for communication and likely our neighbors would have been more appreciative.

Another look at how close the slide was to the electrical box.

Lesson Learned: We’re Never Leaving Without Them Again

Whether you already own a set of walkie-talkies or not, I find them a very useful tool to have a board to assist in communication and coordination. These also aide in keeping the serenity of nature peaceful instead of having one person yelling up to the other while maneuvering to park. Additionally, if you have children traveling with you, it’s a great option to be able to send a kid out to play at the park with a walkie-talkie while you stay at home and work on things or relax in a quiet space. My lesson has been learned this season. Needless to say, we now have some aboard for our summer travels. Now our neighbors can enjoy the great outdoors without us as a great annoyance yelling up to the truck while parking.
