Safety Tips to Avoid Distracted Driving

Things you may or may not realize are distracting you while you drive your RV

According to the National Safety Council, distracted driving tragically leads to about 3,000 deaths each year in the United States. Distractions can come from various sources—like radios, GPS devices, pets, and even fellow passengers—making it essential for all drivers to stay alert.

At Learn to RV, we believe that understanding these potential distractions can empower you to anticipate and avoid them, significantly lowering your risk of accidents while enjoying the open road. This blog delves into the myriad distractions that can arise during your travels and offers tips to help ensure that your RV adventures are both safe and enjoyable!

Every year phone-based distracted driving causes 2 million accidents!

Since your RV is a home on wheels,

you have access to amenities that other drivers don’t.

But that also means as an RV'er you have to be a vigilant driver.

Technology & Distracted Driving

  • Texting
  • Responding to Emails
  • Using the phone
  • Browsing Social Media
  • Watching Sports or a movie
  • Programming the GPS while driving
  • Searching through a playlist
  • Using Headphones
  • Getting engrossed in a podcast or audiobook

Texting and driving is a dangerous mix that takes your mind and hands off the wheel, and while every state except Montana has laws against it, the risks remain high.

Even taking hands-free calls can divert your focus away from the road. If a call is essential, pull over to a safe spot first.

Browsing social media or searching for that perfect playlist while driving can cost you those crucial seconds needed to avoid an accident.

At Learn to RV, we emphasize safety on the road. Set your music and GPS before you start your journey, and remember: it's always better to be a few minutes late than to risk a distracted driving incident.

Your safety should always come first!

In today’s tech-savvy world, newer RVs come with an array of impressive gadgets, but they can also be distracting. We want to emphasize that while it’s tempting to explore all those features on-the-go, focus on what's essential.

Safety first

Keep your eyes on the road!

Distracted driving impacts thousands of Americans every year.

Distracted driving is a major threat on our roads, claiming 3,275 lives in 2023 alone. At Learn to RV, we believe in RV road safety first!

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration mission is to combat this dangerous behavior. Let’s make our journeys safer together by being aware & mindful that our actions can impact our driving!

When you’re on the open road in your RV, those “distractions” can actually enhance the adventure! Who wouldn't want to admire the breathtaking scenery zipping by their windows? Just make sure you pull over to a safe place to do it!

And let’s be honest, sharing the journey with a travel buddy or tuning into your favorite playlist makes the miles fly by.

However, in heavy traffic, it pays to dial down the volume and stay focused. At Learn to RV, we believe that balancing enjoyment with safety is key to creating unforgettable memories on your travels!

LOSING FOCUS AT THE WHEEL

Safe driving is all about staying focused and using all your senses. As you embark on your RV adventures, avoid distractions like rubbernecking at accidents or emergency scenes, which can divert your attention from the road.

Remember, if your mind starts to wander after hours of driving or if you're feeling tired, pull over for a break—drowsy driving is responsible for over 6,000 deaths a year, according to the CDC.

Stay alert, stay safe, and enjoy the journey!

Check the Weather

Being safe on the road truly starts with checking the weather forecast thoroughly. Whether you’re cruising through sunny skies or facing fog, high winds, or unexpected snow, it's wise to stay informed and adapt your travel plans as needed.

The importance of prioritizing safety over sticking to a schedule—after all, a day or two delay can turn into a fun opportunity to explore your current surroundings.

Trust us; a little flexibility goes a long way in ensuring a great RV adventure!

Vehicle Control for RV Success

At Learn to RV, we understand that interactive consoles are meant to enhance your journey, but they can also increase the time your eyes and mind are off the road.

Did you know it takes an average of 40 seconds to input navigation info, enough time to cover 400 yards at 25 mph? Driving a motorhome or a big 5th wheel that number can increase exponentially.

To stay safe, make all necessary adjustments—like checking the temperature or setting your GPS—before hitting the road.

If you want to enjoy the stunning scenery & wildlife, pull over into a safe spot. Be mindful of distances to observing wildlife

(that might be a totally different post!)

Multitasking While Driving

Before you hit the road with your RV, make sure to enjoy your coffee and breakfast sandwich first. If you must snack while driving, have everything prepped and easily accessible to avoid distractions.

Remember, lighting a cigarette or diving into your purse for something can take your focus off the road. It only takes a moment to lose control and that can be catastrophic.

And if you need to freshen up with some makeup, do it before your trip or once you’re parked. If you drop something, just let it be until you can safely pull over.

Your Passengers

When you’re on the road, it’s crucial to prioritize driving over distractions from passengers. If your crew gets a bit rowdy, calmly remind them that everyone’s safety is your top concern.

Your front seat passenger should become your co-pilot. Recently we had a situation where there was a dog herding sheep solo as we drove some back roads in Arizona through Navajo country. While this may be perfectly normal there, we certainly didn't expect those sheep in the middle of the road and had to stop abruptly. A second set of eyes sure helped that day!

Keep conversations focused on driving conditions, and if things get too lively, don’t hesitate to pull over. Maybe stay away from hot topics that could agitate the driver.

Remember, handling distractions, whether they’re a spunky spouse, kids, your pets or an unexpected spill, all of those things can divert your attention and endanger everyone.

At Learn to RV, we encourage both safety and awareness, ensuring your adventures stay enjoyable and accident-free.

Constant vigilance is essential for a safe and enjoyable journey on the road.

Be sure to check your hitch or tow vehicle before hitting the road to ensure no signs of malfunctions are present before you hit the highway.

A good Tire Pressure Monitoring System can help keep your travels even safer.

RV owners should always be on the lookout, scanning the horizon and checking mirrors for potential hazards, upcoming turns, and shifting traffic patterns.

Understanding the size and weight of your RV is critical; making informed decisions on turns and lane changes can make all the difference.

Plus, regular maintenance checks on brakes, tires, and lights keep your vehicle in tip-top shape. By practicing these habits, you ensure a smoother ride for yourself and everyone around you.

At Learn to RV, we understand that the road can be unpredictable, with honking horns and tailgating drivers challenging your focus. But don’t let their reckless behavior derail your good judgment!

Staying safe while driving your RV—packed with your loved ones and precious cargo—is crucial for a great adventure.

Keep distractions at bay, whether it’s technology, snacks, or chatty passengers. Remember, a little extra caution can go a long way in ensuring you enjoy every mile of your journey.
