From Motorhomes to Movement: How FMCA’s Quiet Shift and FRVA’s Bold Vision Are Reshaping The RV Community

The Family RV Association (FRVA), formerly FMCA, is a nationwide RV club offering community, resources, and exclusive perks for RV owners. Joining gives you access to discounts, emergency support, education, and a vibrant network of fellow travelers.
What FMCA Used to Be vs. What It Is Now
Back in the early days of RV travel, before every brand had its own rally and influencer-led caravan, there was FMCA—the Family Motor Coach Association. Founded in 1963, it was the first real club in the industry, built for families and retirees traveling in motorhomes. It wasn’t just about discounts or roadside assistance. It was about connection. Campfire stories. Shared maps. A sense of belonging.
But as the RV landscape evolved, so did the rigs—and the people inside them. In 2017, FMCA made a quiet but significant change: they opened membership to towables. Travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers. The whole spectrum. And yet… almost nobody knew. The shift was barely marketed, and the perception lingered: FMCA was still “for motorhomes.”
Towables Welcome… But Did Anyone Hear?
This is the kind of story we unpack on the Learn to RV podcast. The 2017 policy change should’ve been a rallying cry for inclusivity. Instead, it felt like a whisper. Many towable owners still assume FMCA isn’t for them. And many motorhome owners still see FMCA as a retiree-only club.
So many people have asked.... What does it take to truly welcome someone?
Is it enough to change the rules, or do you have to change the culture? The branding? The outreach? We talk about what inclusivity really looks like in RV life—and how newer organizations are doing it differently.
Why Community Still Matters More Than Membership Type
This is where FRVA (Family RVing Association) enters the story. Born from the desire to create something more inclusive, more transparent, and more joyful, FRVA isn’t just a club—it’s a movement. It now welcomes all rigs, all ages, all backgrounds. It’s built on shared values, not vehicle specs.
FRVA rallies feel different. They’re not just about who you park next to—they’re about who you connect with. Whether you’re a solo traveler in a teardrop or a multigenerational crew in a fifth wheel, you belong. And that belonging is what makes RV life magical.

If you know anything about me at all, you know that community matters. It’s not just a perk of RV life—it’s the glue that holds it all together.
Back in 2013, our family scrimped and saved to join Fulltime Families as charter member #36. We were out here RVing as a family before it was trendy, before the hashtags, before the influencer rallies. We didn’t have a roadmap—we had each other.
A few years later, we joined Escapees. Sure, their mail service was a lifesaver, but what really stuck was the community. The potlucks, the parking lot conversations, the feeling of being seen. We still love our Escapee's community.
Then came The Republic of Nomads—started by friends of ours—an inclusive camping club for families. And Gathering of Nomads, a Christian organization where believers often find themselves wandering together, spiritually and literally.
We joined FRVA (formerly FMCA) in 2017. And while we love what it stands for, we joined for one very specific reason: FRVA Assist.
We’re not just in the RV industry—we’re knee-deep in this community. As a business owner with RV Roofing Solutions, creator, and advocate, I’ve always believed in showing up with heart and purpose. And as of last month, I’m honored to share that I’ve been invited to join the Family RV Association’s Commercial Council.
This isn’t just a title—it’s a responsibility. A chance to help shape the future of FRVA from the inside out. To advocate for transparency, inclusion, and real value for both members and industry partners. I’m proud to represent the voices of families, creators, and small businesses who believe in what this community stands for.
What Is FRVA Assist—and Why is that alone worth joining Family RV Association?
FRVA Assist is a medical emergency and travel assistance program included with your membership. If something happens to you or a family member while you're on the road—whether you're 100 miles from home or 1,000—FRVA Assist steps in.
Here’s what it covers:
- Emergency medical evacuation
- Transportation home for your family
- Return of your RV if you’re unable to drive it
- Help coordinate care and travel logistics
It’s peace of mind in the purest form. If one of us gets hurt or sick, we know our family will be taken care of—and our RV won’t be stranded in the middle of nowhere.
And the truth is, if that were the only reason to join FRVA, it would still be worth the $99 a year. That kind of security is priceless.
We’ve been part of a lot of communities over the years. Some big, some small. Some faith-based, some family-focused. But the thread that runs through all of them is this: belonging.
FRVA isn’t just a club—it’s a safety net. And when you combine that with the kind of inclusive, values-driven community we’ve always sought out, it’s a no-brainer.
If you’re out here RVing—especially with kids, elders, or loved ones—don’t wait until something goes wrong. Join for the peace of mind. Stay for the people.

Introducing Rolling Roots- A new Chapter in Family RV Association
Two years ago, I had an idea with my friends Lisa & Bill: what if there was a dedicated chapter under the Family RV Association (FRVA) banner just for families? Not just full-timers. Not just retirees. But any family—weekenders, roadschoolers, grandparents traveling with grandkids—who wanted to camp, connect, and create lasting memories together.
Today, that idea is finally becoming a reality.
Let me introduce you to the FRVA Rolling Roots Chapter.
This chapter is a dedicated space for all families.
- Families who travel with kids
- Grandparents who RV during school breaks
- Anyone who wants a kid-friendly, community-driven experience
- Events with dedicated kids’ programming, camp-style fun, and inclusive vibes
The FRVA Rolling Roots Chapter is exactly what the RV world needs: a space where families of all kinds can travel with their kids, not just around them. A space where grandparents, weekend warriors, roadschoolers, and full-timers alike can find connection, campfire joy, and a dedicated kids’ camp-style experience.
Let’s be honest: FRVA is still primarily known as an older person’s club. But real change doesn’t come from waiting—it comes from stepping into the gap and making it happen. That’s what Rolling Roots is all about.
How to Join Rolling Roots
1. Become a member of FRVA
You can join at www.frva.com (formerly FMCA). Membership is just $99/year and includes incredible benefits like FRVA Assist, which provides emergency medical evacuation, RV return, and family travel support if something happens on the road. That alone is worth the cost.
2. Join the Rolling Roots Chapter
Once you're a member, you can add chapter membership. Chapters ofen have chapter dues but to establish this community we are offering the 1st year THROUGH December 2026 will be FREE to join. At events we will change a fee for supplies per child or per family, but the plan is to keep it affordble for anyone.
Details will be posted soon on our chapter page, or reach out directly for help joining. We will have a Facebook page for members of FRVA to stay connected.
This isn’t just a chapter—it’s a movement. A place where kids are welcome, families are celebrated, and RV life feels like home.
Is Rolling Roots just for families?
Yes—and no.
Yes, it was created with families in mind. With kids’ programming, multigenerational travel support, and a vision for camp-style connection, it’s a space where parents, grandparents, and caregivers can RV with their kids, not just around them.
But no, it’s not only for families.
The older generation will absolutely still be at rallies. In fact, they’re a vital part of what makes this chapter special. What better place to build a family-friendly, inclusive community than one where wisdom meets wonder? Where seasoned RVers share stories around the fire, and kids learn what it means to wander with purpose?
Maybe you’re a former camp counselor. Or a retired schoolteacher. Or just someone who still lights up when they see kids learning, laughing, and exploring.
Yes! Even you can join the chapter.
You don’t need to be a full-time RVer or a social media pro. You just need heart. A willingness to show up. To be hands-on. To help create moments of wonder and connection for the next generation of travelers. Whether it’s leading a geocaching hike, reading stories around the campfire, or helping with crafts at a rally—your presence matters. And your experience? It’s a gift this community needs.
Rolling Roots is about bridging gaps—not building walls. It’s about embracing differences, honoring every stage of life, and creating a space where we all learn from each other.
Whether you’re a retiree who loves mentoring young families, a solo traveler who finds joy in community, or a grandparent who RVs during school breaks—you belong here.
This chapter isn’t just a new name. It’s a new way forward.
We’re in the early stages—building momentum, gathering families, and laying the foundation for something truly special.
But yes, in time, there may need to be modest “club dues.” Not to pad pockets or complicate things—but to offset rally costs and ensure our hosts are supported.
- Cover the cost of a free campsite for the rally host
- Provide a small budget for activities, supplies, and programming
- Keep events affordable and accessible for all families
We’re intentionally keeping events small: 18 to 25 families max—to invite real connection. No giant crowds. No overstimulation. Just campfires, crafts, shared meals, and space for kids to be kids and grownups to breathe.
Doug Uhlebrock, the new CEO of FRVA, has officially allotted 25 dedicated spaces for families at the upcoming 112th International Convention. This marks the first time we’re bringing families back into the heart of FRVA, and it’s a milestone worth celebrating.
There will be a small fee for Kids Camp, which promises hands-on fun, learning, and connection for younger RVers. Space is limited, so early registration is key—these 25 spots are a bold step toward rebuilding a family presence within the association.
And the momentum doesn’t stop there. FRVA will continue this family-forward focus at the 113th International Convention in Missouri, expanding opportunities for connection, play, and legacy-building across generations.
This isn’t just about logistics—it’s about values. We believe in supporting our hosts, honoring their time, and creating events that feel like home.
So while dues may come later, the heart of Rolling Roots is already here. And it’s built on community, care, and connection.
Why Aren’t More Influencers Rallying Under the FRVA Banner?
The Family RVing Association (FRVA) isn’t just a club—it’s a framework for connection. With regions spanning from international chapters to intimate local crews, there’s truly space for everyone. Whether you’re a solo traveler, a multigenerational family, or a full-time roadschooler, FRVA was built to include you.
And yet… more and more influencers are hosting their own rallies, independently branded and often disconnected from larger community networks. It’s not that they’re opposed to collaboration—it’s that many simply don’t know FRVA exists.
FRVA is a Hidden Gem in Plain Sight
Family RV Association offers real, tangible perks
- FRVA Assist for emergency support
- Discounts from RV-friendly businesses
- Access to vetted chapters and regional events
- A built-in community infrastructure that supports growth, safety, and sustainability
For many members, the savings alone cover the cost of membership. But the real value? It’s in the banner. When you host under FRVA, you’re not just throwing an event—you’re building something bigger. Something lasting.
Kevin and Patrice McCabe, hosts of the popular Discovery Channel series RV There Yet?, have partnered with FRVA to spotlight its inclusive mission and upcoming events.
This past week, I watched Kevin get introduced to a friend’s mom—and the interaction was… interesting. As she heard, “This is Kevin and Patrice McCabe from the hit TV show RV There Yet? on Discovery Channel,” her response was a mix of sweet and skeptical: “Oh, good for you. That’s cute, dear.”
Now, Kevin might not be Gene Autry or one of the Beach Boys, but let me tell you—he’s the real deal. Down-to-earth, generous with his time, and deeply invested in the Family RV Association community. Fame aside, what stands out is his heart. He shows up. He listens. He cares. And in a world full of polished bios and highlight reels, that kind of authenticity is why FRVA is worth fighting for.
Kevin and Patrice care deeply about this community and it shows in everything they do. Beyond their hit show RV There Yet? and their presence at rallies, they’re now starting their own FRVA chapter focused on Geocaching. It’s a perfect blend of adventure, connection, and family-friendly fun. Whether you’re a seasoned cacher or just curious about the hunt, this new chapter invites RVers to explore the outdoors in a whole new way—one hidden treasure at a time.
Kevin & Patrice will be covering FRVA’s 112th International Convention & RV Expo—Changes in Latitudes The RV Beach Party at the Georgia National Fairgrounds. This collaboration is more than just a cameo; it’s a celebration of RV community, education, and shared adventure.
Who Are Kevin and Patrice?
Kevin and Patrice McCabe are the heart behind RV There Yet?, a travel series now in its fifth season that follows their road trips across America. Their show blends wild detours, campfire stories, and real RV life—making them perfect ambassadors for FRVA’s evolving identity.
Could Kevin and Patrice hurt the brand if they pulled out? Sure—any influencer could.
But that’s not the story we’re seeing. They’re not here for a season; they’re here for the mission. From launching a geocaching chapter to showing up at other rallies like GEAR, they’ve proven they care about the heart of this community. And when creators lead with service, not spotlight, the impact lasts—even if their role evolves.
What Kevin & Patrice of RV There Yet Bring to FRVA
- Seminars
- Product demos
- An interactive RV marketplace
- They’ll be engaging with attendees, sharing stories, and possibly even feature a few members in future episodes.
Patrice shared, “We’re so excited to share our passion for RVing with FRVA members and to welcome new RVers to the club.”
Why does a Partnership with RV There Yet Matter?
This collaboration comes at a pivotal moment as FMCA transitions to FRVA—a name that better reflects its inclusive approach to all RV types. Kevin McCabe noted that the rebrand itself inspired the partnership: “We could dive into the history of one of the oldest RV clubs in North America, showcase their success, and explore their exciting future plans.”
This is a visibility boost FRVA deserves. With Kevin and Patrice on board, the message is clear: RVing is for everyone—and so is FRVA.

So why aren’t more people doing it?
Honestly? I think it's the lack of visibility.
FRVA isn’t splashed across Instagram reels or TikTok stories. It’s not a hashtag—it’s a legacy. And in an age of personal branding, that legacy can get lost in the noise.
But here’s the truth: legacy doesn’t trend—it endures. FRVA isn’t just another creator brand. It’s a network built on decades of connection, service, and shared roadmaps. The challenge isn’t relevance—it’s reach.
But imagine what could happen if more creators knew:
- That they could host rallies with built-in support
- That they could tap into a network of chapters and volunteers
- That they could offer their followers more than merch—they could offer membership
If you’re an influencer, a content creator, or just someone who loves bringing people together, ask yourself: What could your rally look like under the FRVA banner?
You don’t have to give up your voice—you just gain a bigger village.
If you ever needed proof that FRVA is more than just a membership—it’s right here. FRVA is a community that can bridge generations, welcomes families, and redefines what RV community can look like.
Grand Design has already stepped up with its own chapter, showing what’s possible when a brand embraces community under the FRVA banner.
Is the investment to Family RV Association worth it?
Absolutely. Especially because it’s being done with intention. FRVA isn’t a fad. It’s not a flash-in-the-pan influencer brand. It’s a platform for retirees, families, creators, and seasoned travelers to build something lasting. But like any legacy, it needs stewards. People who will amplify the message, protect the values, and invite others in.
FRVA can’t endure without new members. After a slow but steady decline—exacerbated by a necessary price hike—the Family RV Association needs you. Not just as a name on a roster, but as a heartbeat in the community. Because the only way others will find value in an organization like this is if they see people who love it. And that’s not up to the leadership—it’s up to the members.
FRVA is run by its members. The club members are the voice, the vote, and the future. When you show up, share your story, and invite others in, you’re not just preserving a legacy—you’re building one. This isn’t about dues. It’s about belonging. And that starts with you & me.
The truth is, many people still don’t even know FRVA is open to them. They still associate it with retirees and motorhomes & while there will ALWAYS be a place for the retiree community in FRVA the community is changing—and we are the ones changing it.
We could build something that honors the FMCA legacy and welcomes the future of Family RV Association. We could turn FRVA into the most inclusive, vibrant, and supportive RV network in North America.
Let’s rally the brands. Let’s invite the influencers. Let’s show them what’s possible when we come under the same banner.
Rolling Roots isn’t just a chapter; it’s a heartbeat. Let's keep adding chapters.
Family RV Association isn’t just a club—it’s a place where people show up for each other. The legacy of the Family RV Association isn’t just about rallies or membership—it’s about generations of travelers who chose connection over isolation, service over self, and tradition over trend.
It’s the campfire stories passed down, the friendships forged across state lines, and the quiet belief that RVing is more than a lifestyle—it’s a way to belong. FRVA has always been about families showing up for each other, whether through mentorship, shared meals, or roadside help.
Today, as new voices rise and platforms evolve, it’s time to carry that legacy forward. Not by reinventing it—but by amplifying it. By tying together the wisdom of the past with the energy of the present, we ensure that FRVA remains not just relevant, but radiant.
