Working From the Road: Real Wifi & Connectivity

Data Is the New Fuel: Staying Connected as an RVer

From navigating routes staying connected, managing remote work to keeping kids learning and streaming for a bit of relaxation, connectivity powers life on the move. Investing in solid data solutions keeps you safe, supported, and in control—no matter where you roam.

In 2013, we hit the road with six kids, a few cell phones, and dreams of simpler living. Frank had just retired, and we had a modest cushion of savings. We thought it would stretch further. Like many families, we quickly learned the freedom of the road comes with unexpected costs—and that supplementing our income wasn't optional, it was survival.

That pivot became the spark. Working from the road wasn't just a way to stay afloat, it was how we built something lasting.

By 2014, we’d shifted gears. We’d tested out workcamping gigs and quickly found ourselves chasing install jobs with a nationwide RV roofing company. The work paid the bills—but it did something else, too. Each job location became a bucket list item we didn’t know we had. We saw places we might’ve skipped, met people we wouldn’t have met, and realized that the path to sustainability could also lead us to wonder.

And with each new gig, one thing became clear: we needed more internet. Between booking jobs, staying in touch with clients, and roadschooling our kids, connectivity went from “nice to have” to “non-negotiable.”

That stretch taught us that flexibility isn't just helpful, it’s transformative. Each job reshaped our journey, turning unfamiliar stops into unforgettable experiences. As we adapted, we grew stronger, both in spirit and in Wi-Fi signal strength. Every hustle added grit, connection, and a deeper sense of purpose to our path.

By 2016, Frank had landed a sweet gig as a service advisor in the RV industry—remote, stable, and surprisingly mobile. It felt like we’d cracked a new level of the roadlife game. But the trade-off? Connectivity became everything. We needed sustainable, reliable internet in every zip code we hit.

Our solution? We went full tech ninja: phones on every major carrier, a dedicated hotspot, and backup plans for our backup plans. Internet wasn’t just about catching emails anymore—it powered our income, our roadschooling, and our ability to keep showing up for the community we were building.

In 2020, we were invited to take a leap of faith into RV Roofing Solutions, shifting from chasing jobs to potentially building something of our own. It was bold. It was messy. It was exactly what our journey had been preparing us for.

By 2022, we weren’t just remote workers—we were now running a mobile company, even while our kids were workcamping that summer in Yellowstone. That meant being reachable everywhere, whether we were parked at a rally, visiting a client, workcamping for the summer with the kids or grabbing groceries in a new town.

Dedicated company lines kept us connected, and adding Starlink to our evolving tech toolkit gave us the bandwidth (literally) to grow with confidence.

Reliable tech wasn’t just a lifeline anymore, it became our launchpad.

While Frank is a retired Marine, it was often just enough to pay the bills. But for many rvers, the road isn’t a break from real life—it is real life. We work to fund the journey, fuel our passions, and model flexibility for our kids. Whether you're a remote employee, small business owner, or creative freelancer, or workcamper - working from the road means choosing freedom with intention.

For us, the journey isn’t just about sustaining our own lifestyle either—it’s about creating pathways for other families to do the same. Through our work with RV Roofing Solutions, we’ve helped fellow travelers turn uncertainty into opportunity, offering flexible income that fits the roadschooling rhythm and the RV lifestyle.

We don’t take that lightly. When someone joins our team, they’re not just getting a paycheck—they’re becoming part of a story built on trust &  mentorship. In fact,

supporting others in funding their journey is one of the most meaningful parts of ours.

What It Really Takes: Here’s what we’ve learned (sometimes the hard way):

  • Reliable Internet Is Gold
Invest in multiple options—Starlink, hotspots, campground Wi-Fi backups. And always have a Plan B.
  • Boundaries Matter
Work hours don’t magically appear. You have to carve them out—especially when your “office” is also your living room, classroom, and kitchen.
  • Designated Work Zones Help
Whether it’s a fold-out desk, picnic table, or co-working space at a rally, having a physical cue for “work mode” makes a difference.
  • Flexibility Is a Superpower
Sometimes you work early mornings, sometimes late nights. Sometimes you work

from a mountaintop. The key is knowing your rhythm—and honoring it.

Do we really need our OWN internet connection?

That data bill might feel like a car payment, but it's funding freedom: It empowers us to run a business from just about anywhere, supporting our kids’ education, and staying securely connected. It gives our family the ability to easily juggle client calls, upload contracts, stay connected to our install teams( even on travel days), and  seamlessly roadschool. For us, the investment isn’t just practical—it’s empowering.

So....  Yes you need a secure connection—especially if you’re running a business, like us,  roadschooling, or managing sensitive client data. Public Wi-Fi might seem convenient, but it’s like leaving your front door wide open in a busy campground.

Why Public Wi-Fi Is Risky
Public networks are notorious for being unsecured. Even password-protected campground Wi-Fi can be vulnerable.

Over 40% of travelers have had their data compromised on public Wi-Fi. That’s not paranoia—it’s math. And this is a roadschool lesson we would encourage you to teach rather than experience first-hand.

How to Protect Yourself and Your Clients
If you must use public Wi-Fi:

✅ Use a VPN to encrypt your traffic.

✅ Stick to HTTPS websites (look for the padlock icon).

✅ Disable file sharing and auto-connect features.

✅ Avoid accessing sensitive accounts (banking, client portals).

✅ Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication.

But ideally? Use your own secured network. It gives you control, consistency, and peace of mind—especially when you’re stewarding client trust and family data.

Let's be honest, while most campgrounds claim to offer free Wi-Fi, in practice, it’s rarely reliable for streaming anyway. Limited infrastructure and aging routers means you just end up with poor signal strength & frustrations. Shared bandwidth causes major slowdowns—especially during peak evening hours when everyone’s online. At best, you’ll be able to check email or browse lightly, but streaming shows is usually out of reach unless the campground offers premium tiers or has invested in tech-forward upgrades.

Our Mobile Command Center

iPad with a Dedicated Line:
Acts as our secure portal to client information—easy to access, totally private, and separate from day-to-day chatter.

Verizon & T-Mobile Phones:
Dual carriers mean wider coverage, fewer dead zones, and a reliable fallback when one network dips.

Starlink Gen 2 + Starlink Mini:
Our dynamic duo of satellite internet. Gen 2 handles the heavy lifting while the Mini gives us extra flexibility on travel days since it's magnetically mounted to the truck, perfect for quick setups or backup signal when we need to stay agile.

This setup isn’t just about being online—it’s about building trust, staying visible, and leading a company that works wherever we are. From mountaintop client calls to late-night quote reviews at the rally booth, it’s our digital lifeline.

Roadschooling Runs Better on Reliable Connections

Working from the road with kids adds additional layers—but also a bit of magic since our classroom has no limits. We may be modeling entrepreneurship, adaptability, and problem-solving in real time but, sometimes, that means muting a Zoom call while someone spills glitter on the dinette too. Whether your kids are downloading curriculum and submitting assignments to researching local history and connecting with other RV learners, roadschooling thrives when families can depend on a strong digital connections.

In 2025, reliable internet is the backbone of roadschooling—whether it's diving into a math lesson on IXL, joining a virtual co-op, gaming with friends on Discord, or streaming an audiobook during a dusty desert drive. Solid bandwidth and true unlimited data aren’t luxuries anymore—they’re what keep learning connected, friendships alive, and the adventure rolling without tech hiccups.

While binders and printed workbooks offer the comfort of structure and tactile learning, there’s no denying it—books are heavy, and space is precious. In an RV, every pound and inch matters. A full curriculum set can eat up storage fast, not to mention become a juggling act across multiple kids, ages, and subjects.

That’s why many roadschooling families blend printed materials with digital tools, rotating resources seasonally or swapping them out at rallies and library stops. Others opt for modular programs that let them use just the pieces they need.

So what's the trick? Staying flexible and remembering that learning happens outside the pages, too—in stargazing, storytelling, and shared moments that never weigh a thing.

I’ve taken client calls from national parks, written blog posts in Walmart parking lots, and launched products from a rally booth. The kids have googled facts on a drive and scoured Atlas Obscura for unique things to do wherever we travel....all because we have that power at our fingertips. It’s not always glamorous—but it’s always worth it.

Why TechnoRV Stands Out for Mobile Internet

We have been seriously toying with the idea of adding Techno RV digital tools to our line-up even with our dual Starlink systems, a dedicated iPad line, and T-Mobile and Verizon phones in play. Adding TechnoRV internet gear would boost our setup from robust to resilient.

Their Pepwave routers unify your multiple connections—cellular, Wi-Fi, Starlink—into one smartly managed network, minimizing downtime and dropped signals. Failover protection ensures seamless switching if any single source falters, so livestreams, uploads, and client work stay uninterrupted.

With centralized controls, we would gain visibility across all devices and can prioritize bandwidth for mission-critical tasks like podcast recordings or Zoom calls. Even when campground Wi-Fi is our only option, TechnoRV’s boosted antennas would more than outpace built-in gear, giving our rig stronger, steadier access. It’s not about replacing our tech—it’s about empowering it to work smarter, together.

Eric and Tami Johnson, the founders of Techno RV, have lived the nomadic RV lifestyle and personally tested every product they sell. That means their gear isn’t just tech—it’s road-proven.

As of April 2025, Michael and Randi Kilbourne are the new owners of TechnoRV. They took over from Eric and Tami, who had led the company since 2014 and helped shape it into a trusted name in RV tech and education.

Michael and Randi aren’t newcomers—they’ve been full-time RVers since 2019 and were already deeply involved with TechnoRV before the transition. They’ve attended over 30 RV shows and rallies a year, hosted seminars, and built strong relationships with the RV community. Michael is especially known for presenting educational seminars at events.

They’re continuing dedication to TechnoRV’s legacy of curated gear, hands-on support, and community-first values, just with a fresh dose of energy and firsthand experience.

TechnoRV only stocks products they use themselves. You’re not wading through endless options, they’ve already done the vetting.

Education-First Approach
Whether or not you buy products from Michael & Randi they will take the time to help you understand. Their rally seminars are designed to teach, not just sell. You get hands-on guidance, setup support, and real-world troubleshooting tips.

They specialize in Pepwave mobile routers, which can combine multiple internet sources (cellular, Wi-Fi, Starlink) into one secure network. Perfect for your multi-layered setup.

Their routers support hot failover ( think - no dropped Zoom calls!) and can combine multiple cellular bands for faster speeds—ideal for shows, rallies, and remote work.

TechnoRV works closely with FRVA’s Tech Connect+ program, which offers exclusive mobile internet plans for RVers—including hotspot rentals, BYOD SIMs, and phone plans. Then they can customize the setup by combining TechnoRV gear with FRVA’s curated data plans, backed by expert support from both teams. Plus, enjoy exclusive discounts and trusted tools already tested by the RV community.

Is internet safety on the road worth the investment?

Working from the road isn’t just about income—it’s about impact. It’s about building a life that fits your values, your family, and your dreams. And it’s about doing it together, one mile at a time.

Even in retirement, reliable internet opens doors—especially on the road. It’s your connection to family, banking, health care, travel planning, and community. From video chatting with grandkids to finding that perfect boondocking spot or checking real-time weather and road conditions, being online makes the lifestyle smoother and safer.

And if you're like many retired RVers, staying plugged in means sharing your journey, exploring new hobbies, keeping up with news, or even dipping into part-time work or volunteering. It's not about being “always on”—it’s about having the choice.

In the RV world, your connection isn’t just about Netflix and navigation—it’s your lifeline for business, education, and protecting those you serve. Public Wi-Fi might feel convenient, but it’s a gamble you don’t need to take when your data, your clients, and your family’s privacy are on the line. Investing in secure, reliable internet—whether it’s dual-carrier hotspots, encrypted routers, or satellite coverage—isn’t cheap. But neither is a data breach, lost client trust, or compromised communications.

Digital safety isn't a luxury anymore. It’s part of your rig’s foundation—right next to your roof,  tires and tanks. So layer up with tools like VPNs, password managers, private networks, and a smart tech stack. Because peace of mind, especially when you live and work without a fixed address, is worth every penny.
